Kioku is a tracker for anime, manga and light novels that runs on your own computer. It is made first for Windows and works on macOS and Linux too. Your library lives in a database on your computer, syncs with AniList, MyAnimeList, AniDB, Kitsu, MangaBaka, Shikimori, Simkl and Bangumi, sends to Trakt, plays your episodes in mpv or follows the player you already use, reads your manga and light novels, and lets you watch together with friends. Kioku speaks English, Slovak and Czech.

    New in 2.37.0

A Kioku server now keeps its own database of anime, manga and light novels and brings it up to date by itself.

    • Every anime from the anime-offline-database and from AniList, with summaries, English and Japanese titles, studios, producers, episode length, dates, trailers, scores and the next episode. The airing and announced ones are read again every hour.
    • Every manga, manhwa, manhua and light novel from MangaBaka, read each week: titles in many languages, authors and artists, summaries, chapter and volume counts, genres, tags, publishers and links. A fresh server holds about 300,000 titles.
    • Title pages on the website list related titles: sequels, prequels, side stories, adaptations and the source.
    • Search, seasons and browsing put the titles more people follow first, so Frieren, One Piece or Berserk come before their spin-offs.
    • For admins, Server, Catalog shows how many titles the database holds, each job's last run and the next, and runs one now. The legal notice names the sources and their licenses.
    • MangaBaka's "erotica" rating does not mark a title as adult; only explicit titles are hidden from people who did not choose to see them.

macOS 12 and later Kioku-2.37.0-macos.zip Move Kioku to Applications and open it. It is not notarized, so the first time open System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
Linux x64 and arm64 Kioku-2.37.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-2.37.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz Extract and run ./kioku. Kioku adds itself to the application menu.
Browser extension Kioku-2.37.0-extension-chromium.zip, Kioku-2.37.0-extension-firefox.zip Chromium-based browsers: unzip, open the extensions page, turn on Developer mode and choose Load unpacked. Kioku server (Linux x64 and arm64) Kioku-server-2.37.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-server-2.37.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz For your own Kioku server with docker or podman: curl -fsSL https://git.toxik.space/Toxuki/kioku/raw/branch/main/deploy/install.sh | bash -s -- --domain your.domain, or extract the archive and run ./kioku.sh install --domain your.domain. Its README.md covers Nginx Proxy Manager, the firewall, updates and backups.

SHA256SUMS lists the checksums of every file. Kioku opens in a window of its own (WebView2 on Windows; on Linux WebKitGTK, or a Chromium-based browser's app window with NVIDIA graphics or without WebKitGTK; the default browser as a last resort). To connect AniList, open Services, choose Connect on AniList and approve: nothing else to set up. The first sync is always a preview that changes nothing until you apply it.

To play episodes in Kioku's own player, install mpv; or keep the player you have and let Kioku follow it. Everything else Kioku needs comes with it or installs itself.

Everything Kioku does and good to know: the full notes. Earlier releases: all notes.

Emails that arrive, roles of your own, more languages, and pictures next to names.

    • Emails from a Kioku server now carry a Message-ID. Without one, Gmail and other providers refused some of them or filed them as spam, so some members never got the email to confirm their address. Emails the mail server puts off go again for about a day instead of being lost.
    • Server, People shows how each member's last email went, with Send confirmation again and Mark address confirmed. Send me a test email says at once whether the mail server takes it, with its answer when it does not.
    • Roles of your own beside member, moderator and admin, such as Beta: a name, a colour, the abilities they give, and a badge next to names on profiles and forum posts. A chip on each member's row gives a role or takes it.
    • Twelve more languages to translate Kioku into on a server: French, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian, Hungarian, Dutch, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Turkish, Indonesian and Vietnamese, each started with the texts seen most.
    • Watch together shows the picture of each person in the room and in its chat who is a member of your Kioku server. Reviews, a list's owner and the guests of a watch party show their pictures too.
    • When a service refuses the client ID or its return address, connecting shows the exact address to register and a Change client button.

Your own Kioku on the website.

    • Signed in on a Kioku server's website, you now get your own copy of the Kioku app, running on the server and connected to your account. Search, seasons, schedule, franchises, charts, stats, settings and Services are the app's own, the same as on your computer. Signed out, the website is as before. Playing files, reading folders and watch together stay in the desktop app.
    • What these apps ask AniList, and the covers and pictures they show, are kept once on the server for every member and fetched again only when old or missing.
    • Your app on the website counts days in your time zone.
    • MyAnimeList's password box that asks again and again is explained: when MyAnimeList does not take the client's return address, Services says so and shows the exact address to register, and a client ID it does not know is said as before. A client saved wrongly can be changed with Change client.
    • The server adds https:// when KIOKU_SERVER_BASE_URL lacks it. Without it, AniList and MyAnimeList sign-ins went to a broken address.
    • You shows your account's picture.
    • For server admins: the image and the archives carry the app; compose.yaml keeps the members' apps in the kioku-apps volume, the Portainer stack in /data/apps. Each running app takes about 60 MB of memory and stops after 30 minutes unused. KIOKU_SERVER_HOSTED=off turns it off.

Applying a sync preview works again for big lists.

    • Apply on a preview always applies now. When the list on the service changed since the preview, the list as it is at that moment goes in, merged as before, so nothing newer on the service is written over. Before, such a list made a new preview on every click and was never applied.

Connecting MyAnimeList says what is wrong instead of asking for a password again and again.

    • When MyAnimeList does not know the client ID you saved, Kioku says so before sending you there, with what to check: the Client ID rather than the secret, and a client not still waiting for approval. Spaces pasted around the ID or the secret no longer matter.
    • A Kioku server warns, in its log and under Server, Services, when its own address is not a whole https:// address, which keeps AniList and MyAnimeList from sending people back after they approve.

The Kioku server's website catches up with the app in three places.

    • Services on the website: connect AniList or MyAnimeList there and the server keeps them in step with your Kioku library, no app needed. Admins set the services up under Server, Services, with the client ID from each service; the page shows the address to register.
    • Updating the server from its admin page: it always shows the version, checks for a new release when asked, updates with one click, and can update by itself at night at an hour you choose. Servers installed with kioku.sh before this version: run ./kioku.sh enable-updates once.
    • Your profile picture and name show in the sidebar, on the website and in the app, right after you change them.

Legal pages, and the server doing what they promise.

    • A Kioku server has a privacy policy, terms of use, a legal notice and a cookies page, in English, Slovak and Czech, linked from every page before signing in and from Account. They say what the server keeps and why, who else gets it, for how long, your rights, how moderation works and how to object.
    • Whoever runs a server fills in their details under Server, Legal: name, address, contact, country, hosting, mail provider and the youngest age to sign up, plus their own additions.
    • When you report something, you hear what came of it. A suspended account gets an email saying why, and signing in shows the reason and whom to write to. Moderation notices say how to object.
    • Download my data now holds everything the server keeps about you.
    • Settings, About lists the open-source software inside Kioku with its licences, and every download carries the same list. Help has a new Privacy topic: what Kioku keeps on your computer and what it sends where.

    New in 2.32.1

Watching together uses Kioku's own player.

    • A room plays its episodes in Kioku's own player when that is your player, not in a new mpv window, and starts the episode you picked, not another one.
    • Pick which version of an episode to play (a release, a resolution); following a friend into an episode or on to the next one plays the same version they do, when you have it.
    • Pausing, playing on, jumping and skipping an opening reach everyone and say who did it on the picture: "Ann paused at 0:22", "Ann skipped the opening".
    • Closing the player in the middle of an episode pauses it for everyone and says who stopped.
    • Under the player, the room shows who is here and what they watch, offers to watch along with them, and keeps its log and chat.
    • Everyone stays on the same moment after a jump, and holding the seek keys no longer pauses the room.

    System File First start
Windows 10 and 11 Kioku-2.32.1-windows.zip Unzip it and double-click Kioku.exe. Kioku is not code signed, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. Kioku adds itself to the Start menu.
macOS 12 and later Kioku-2.32.1-macos.zip Move Kioku to Applications and open it. It is not notarized, so the first time open System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
Linux x64 and arm64 Kioku-2.32.1-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-2.32.1-linux-arm64.tar.gz Extract and run ./kioku. Kioku adds itself to the application menu.
Browser extension Kioku-2.32.1-extension-chromium.zip, Kioku-2.32.1-extension-firefox.zip Chromium-based browsers: unzip, open the extensions page, turn on Developer mode and choose Load unpacked. Firefox: about:debugging > This Firefox > Load Temporary Add-on (Developer Edition and Nightly can keep it for good).
Kioku server (Linux x64 and arm64) Kioku-server-2.32.1-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-server-2.32.1-linux-arm64.tar.gz For your own Kioku server with docker or podman: curl -fsSL https://git.toxik.space/Toxuki/kioku/raw/branch/main/deploy/install.sh | bash -s -- --domain your.domain, or extract the archive and run ./kioku.sh install --domain your.domain.

More to do with friends and clubs on a Kioku account.

    • Clubs have a calendar: watch a title together a few episodes a week (members hear when each week starts, at the same hour on your clock all year), see the club's parties and weeks ahead, and add them to a calendar app. Clubs can name members' roles and give badges of their own.
    • Challenge a friend to finish a title or a list first, with your progress side by side.
    • Rank titles with friends in a shared tier list and see how much you agree.
    • Ask your friends whether to start a title; they answer yes or no with a line.
    • Every title recommended to you waits in one inbox, to plan or put aside.
    • Keep lines you love from titles on your profile, and make playlists of openings and endings that play one after another.
    • Keep manga or novels out of your activity, or show it to close friends only; lists and playlists can be for close friends too.
    • Forum threads take tags you can follow; episode threads show how the episode felt to everyone; each title has a guide anyone can write (where to start, watch order, what to skip); thank members for fixing a title's record.
    • The Seasons page shows what your friends plan, and each season has a bingo card of anime moments to tick together.
    • Past watch parties keep who came and what was said in the room. People with a taste like yours show on People.
    • A post you have not sent waits as a draft on every device.

The player keeps subtitles on time and on the picture.

    • Subtitles no longer run early in episodes whose files do not start their clock at zero (transport streams and some remuxes).
    • Lines come and go on their frame at any speed, also at 2x and 0.5x.
    • Subtitles sit on the picture and are sized by it, not on the black bars around it.
    • Outline set to none leaves no dark edge: the shadow is now soft and falls down and to the right, in Kioku's window and in mpv. Blu-ray subtitles lose the disc's outline too, and follow left or right lines.
    • Holding the arrow keys, j and l, or the back and forward buttons keeps going, and the episode carries on from where you let go.
    • The volume shows its percentage beside the slider and on the picture when you change it with the keys.
