Kioku is a tracker for anime, manga, light novels and visual novels that runs on your own computer. It is made first for Windows and works on macOS and Linux too. Your library lives in a database on your computer, syncs with AniList, MyAnimeList, AniDB, Kitsu, MangaBaka, Shikimori, Simkl, Bangumi and VNDB, sends to Trakt, plays your episodes in mpv or follows the player you already use, reads your manga and light novels, and lets you watch together with friends. Kioku speaks English, Slovak and Czech.

    New in 2.90.0

    • Home offers your own watch-soon tags (such as Top Priority or Will Watch Soon) for Up next, so Play on Up next plays them one after another.
    • A new episode's notice has Queue beside Watch, and the player's More menu shows the queue in full screen.
    • After an episode watched on a service's site and marked on coming back, the queue's next is one press away.
    • Trying the season's first episodes: when one ends, Not for me drops the title before the next starts.
    • Fixed: the queue could be written over when its first read failed.

    Download and first start

    System File First start
Windows 10 and 11 Kioku-2.90.0-windows.zip Unzip it and double-click Kioku.exe. Kioku is not code signed, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. Kioku adds itself to the Start menu.
macOS 12 and later Kioku-2.90.0-macos.zip Move Kioku to Applications and open it. It is not notarized, so the first time open System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
Linux x64 and arm64 Kioku-2.90.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-2.90.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz Extract and run ./kioku. Kioku adds itself to the application menu.
Browser extension Kioku-2.90.0-extension-chromium.zip, Kioku-2.90.0-extension-firefox.zip Chromium-based browsers: unzip, open the extensions page, turn on Developer mode and choose Load unpacked. Firefox: about:debugging > This Firefox > Load Temporary Add-on (Developer Edition and Nightly can keep it for good).
Kioku server (Linux x64 and arm64) Kioku-server-2.90.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-server-2.90.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz For your own Kioku server with docker or podman: curl -fsSL https://git.toxik.space/Toxuki/kioku/raw/branch/main/deploy/install.sh | bash -s -- --domain your.domain, or extract the archive and run ./kioku.sh install --domain your.domain. Its README.md covers Nginx Proxy Manager, the firewall, updates and backups.

SHA256SUMS lists the checksums of every file. Kioku opens in a window of its own (WebView2 on Windows; on Linux WebKitGTK, or a Chromium-based browser's app window with NVIDIA graphics or without WebKitGTK; the default browser as a last resort). To connect AniList, open Services, choose Connect on AniList and approve: nothing else to set up. The first sync is always a preview that changes nothing until you apply it.

To play episodes in Kioku's own player, install mpv; or keep the player you have and let Kioku follow it. Everything else Kioku needs comes with it or installs itself.

Everything Kioku does and good to know: the full notes. Earlier releases: all notes.

    • Seasons: Try the first episodes plays episode 1 of each title you planned (or never began) this season, one after another in Kioku's window.
    • At the end of the last file, the next episode on YouTube or Bilibili now comes after the countdown too, so a binge goes on by itself.
    • A service's card says how many changes wait to go, why (such as AniList turning its API off for a while) and when they are tried again.
    • The phone remote says what the queue plays next; clearing the queue can be undone, and the command palette plays or clears it.
    • Fixed: day reckoning for languages that write other digits, the week starting as your region's does, the last times written the browser's way, a stale schedule naming the Kioku server, and notices showing pictures with No pictures on.

    • The queue is kept by Kioku itself, so your phone and your computer share it: the phone remote shows it and starts it on the computer.
    • Play next and Add to queue in the library's right-click menu, and Add to queue for a single episode in the episode list.
    • A title's adaptations found together make one notice ("Mahouka gets 3 manga").
    • Fixed: when nothing in the queue could play, the window stopped on the last picture; it now goes on to the next episode or shows the end. Next does nothing when there is nothing next, a title playing now goes on from the episode after it, and the phone keeps an item the computer did not take.
    • Fixed: a streaming link one source stopped listing while another still listed it was taken away; a link now stays while any source lists it.

    • A play queue in Kioku's own window: Play next and Add to queue in a title's menu, beside each opening, in the library's selection and on a quiz's answer. When an episode ends, the queue plays before the title's own next episode; the watch page lists it to reorder or clear, and the Watch page shows a waiting queue with Play.
    • Play on Up next, on your lists and on playlists of openings plays them one after another in Kioku's window, one episode of each title. Your playlists of openings show on the Lists page too.
    • Fixed: titles came to a streaming service, left it and came back (with a notice each time) when AniList and the Kioku server listed different links.
    • Discover says once that the Kioku server did not answer.

    • Franchises: find one by any of its titles, show only the ones under way, not begun or finished, and order them by the least left, the most titles or the name.
    • Dates and times are written as your region writes them: English with Slovakia set reads 17:30 and 8 Oct 2026.
    • Three or more titles coming to (or leaving) one streaming service at once make one notice, not one each on every device.
    • The schedule opens at once from a kept copy of the Kioku server's timetable and refreshes it behind.
    • The Watch page's service shelves put titles tagged to watch soon (Home's Up next tags) right after the ones in progress.
    • Lists with a Kioku account say when the login ended or the server did not answer, instead of loading for good or showing no lists.
    • Fixed: starter paths kept the titles a service did not answer as gaps for good.

    • Group the library by streaming service: each title under the first of your services that has it for your region.
    • The calendar feed says where each episode streams, as the event's place.
    • The opening quiz plays endings too, or both.
    • Kioku's own window can go on in picture in picture by itself when you switch away, where the browser offers it.
    • The question on coming back from a service's site stays up for a minute, and the player's settings are found by the settings search.
    • Fixed: a notification's Watch on a YouTube or Bilibili episode could open nothing; without ffmpeg such a stream now opens in the browser; Linux notifications show buttons only when Kioku will hear them; a paired phone opens only a title's own links on the computer.

    • Notifications on Linux get Watch, Mark watched and Open buttons. Watch goes through Kioku everywhere: a free official stream plays in Kioku's own window, any other opens on its site and Kioku asks on your return whether you watched it.

    • Bring in your AniList history right from the Stats calendar.

    • Tags that stand for a score: in Settings, give your Masterpiece or Good tags a score, and titles you never scored count with it in For you and Taste, and Home stops asking to score them.
    • Make a list of a tag's titles from the tag manager, to order, note and share.
    • The library search leaves things out with a minus (-planning) and finds your tags by their words, emoji aside (#masterpiece, #"will watch soon").
    • The schedule and Home's airing week mark where each of your titles streams.
    • Watch next prefers a link meant for your region over a favourite service's link meant elsewhere.
    • On Linux, when Kioku's own window cannot play, it names the GStreamer plugins it needs.

    • Taste lists the staff behind the anime you watch (directors, series composition, music, character design, original creators); they are read in the background with the casts.
    • Achievements reached with an imported list take the days your list tells (when titles were added or finished), not the day of the import; ones already noted that way are mended.
    • Coming back from a service's site after watching several episodes in a row offers to mark the whole run.
    • Mark the episode watched from the watch page when the share that counts it never played.
    • The Watch page points to the browser extension once, when one of your services plays only on its site.
    • Library cards keep their line within the card on touch screens.
