Kioku is a tracker for anime, manga, light novels and visual novels that runs on your own computer. It is made first for Windows and works on macOS and Linux too. Your library lives in a database on your computer, syncs with AniList, MyAnimeList, AniDB, Kitsu, MangaBaka, Shikimori, Simkl, Bangumi and VNDB, sends to Trakt, plays your episodes in mpv or follows the player you already use, reads your manga and light novels, and lets you watch together with friends. Kioku speaks English, Slovak and Czech.

    New in 2.80.0

    • Up next can take your own tags: choose them under Arrange sections on Home, and titles tagged as your "watch soon" lists follow your Up next.
    • Watch together works with streams: a friend's YouTube or Bilibili stream plays along in Kioku's own window, and the room's queue plays streams when no file is here.
    • Kioku's own window answers the keyboard's media keys, headphones and a phone's lock screen, and shows what plays in the system's media controls.
    • On a touch screen a tap shows the window's controls instead of pausing, and a double tap on either side seeks ten seconds; the controls fit a phone's width.
    • Note a moment, and mark an opening, ending or recap (shared with AniSkip if you like), right from the window. A marked opening or ending now replaces the one from chapters or AniSkip.

    System File First start
Windows 10 and 11 Kioku-2.80.0-windows.zip Unzip it and double-click Kioku.exe. Kioku is not code signed, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. Kioku adds itself to the Start menu.
macOS 12 and later Kioku-2.80.0-macos.zip Move Kioku to Applications and open it. It is not notarized, so the first time open System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
Linux x64 and arm64 Kioku-2.80.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-2.80.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz Extract and run ./kioku. Kioku adds itself to the application menu.
Browser extension Kioku-2.80.0-extension-chromium.zip, Kioku-2.80.0-extension-firefox.zip Chromium-based browsers: unzip, open the extensions page, turn on Developer mode and choose Load unpacked. Firefox: about:debugging > This Firefox > Load Temporary Add-on (Developer Edition and Nightly can keep it for good).
Kioku server (Linux x64 and arm64) Kioku-server-2.80.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-server-2.80.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz For your own Kioku server with docker or podman: curl -fsSL https://git.toxik.space/Toxuki/kioku/raw/branch/main/deploy/install.sh | bash -s -- --domain your.domain, or extract the archive and run ./kioku.sh install --domain your.domain. Its README.md covers Nginx Proxy Manager, the firewall, updates and backups.

SHA256SUMS lists the checksums of every file. Kioku opens in a window of its own (WebView2 on Windows; on Linux WebKitGTK, or a Chromium-based browser's app window with NVIDIA graphics or without WebKitGTK; the default browser as a last resort). To connect AniList, open Services, choose Connect on AniList and approve: nothing else to set up. The first sync is always a preview that changes nothing until you apply it.

To play episodes in Kioku's own player, install mpv; or keep the player you have and let Kioku follow it. Everything else Kioku needs comes with it or installs itself.

Everything Kioku does and good to know: the full notes. Earlier releases: all notes.

    • Kioku's own window shows a file's chapters on the seek bar and beside the time, and PageUp and PageDown step through them as in mpv; YouTube's chapters come with a stream. Press ? while it plays for all its keys.
    • A subtitle delay in the window (z and x, or under Audio and subtitles), kept for the title's next episodes and shared with mpv's.
    • Even out loud and quiet parts, for late nights: in the window's More menu and in Settings, for the window and mpv alike.
    • Find subtitles right from the window; one you save shows at once.
    • At the end of the last episode file, the window offers the next episode where it streams.
    • Kioku guesses your region from the time zone when none is set, so streams meant for other countries (Muse Asia, Ani-One Asia, Bilibili's international site) no longer count among your services on Watch or in filters.
    • The jump bar beside long lists sorted by date names the months instead of repeating the year.

    • Your phone works as a remote for Kioku's own window, as it did for mpv: while an episode plays on the computer, the phone shows it at the bottom and the Remote pauses, seeks, skips, changes episode, volume, subtitles and audio, or stops. With nothing playing, the Remote (under Watch on the phone) starts the next episode on the computer.
    • The Discord status and the mark watched and +1 shortcuts follow what plays in Kioku's own window too.
    • A stream in Kioku's own window shows the subtitles its service gives, and a streamed episode resumes where you stopped.
    • Where to watch marks a link that did not play here lately.
    • Home's Gone quiet opens its titles as cards too.
    • Fixed: the TV bar, the Elsewhere bar, the shortcuts' messages, the daily limit notice and pages refreshing behind (Seasons, Trending, Where to watch) missed their live updates.

    • A stream that cannot play here says why where you pressed Watch, before any player opens, and Kioku remembers it: the next Watch, and the Watch page, pick another of your services first. Without a region set, a stream refused for your country offers to set it.
    • An episode streamed in Kioku's own window leads on to the next one.
    • A yt-dlp installed before Deno came along gets Deno at the daily check, so YouTube plays fully.
    • A stream left open for hours is read again before the service's address runs out, and a title's trailer in the window is named as one.

    • With Kioku's own window as the player, free official streams (YouTube, Bilibili), trailers, the season's trailer reel and openings and endings play there too, from every place that plays them, not in mpv. A link to a whole series plays the episode you asked for.
    • When a stream cannot play, Kioku says why: not offered in your country, taken down, a sign-in wanted. Before, mpv only said "unrecognized file format".
    • Installing yt-dlp brings Deno along, which YouTube needs for many videos.
    • Home offers to read the next chapter on the publisher's site.
    • Waiting for a score asks once whether a tag you put on finished titles, such as Masterpiece, means you loved them.

    • Read lists the manga and light novels you read elsewhere, with the next chapter on the publisher's site where AniList knows one (it asks afterwards whether you read it) and +1. Where to read is found for the books you read without opening their pages.
    • The Kioku server ends shows that ended within the hour; they no longer stay Airing until the monthly sweep.
    • Fill in dates is one change with Undo.
    • A history import that stops halfway keeps what it read; Look again brings in the rest.
    • Library's and a title page's More menus come in groups.
    • A finished title with a tag that means you loved it is not waiting for a score.

    • Go through In progress as cards too: keep going, pause or drop, the titles left alone longest first. The decks now take back their last change themselves.
    • Tags that mean you loved a title (Settings, General): an unscored title with one counts as one of your best rated for Home's recommendations, for a library judged in custom lists like Masterpiece.
    • Library groups by format, the way AniList splits a list.
    • Home's Waiting for a score keeps to titles finished in the last two months.
    • Messages and their Undo show above open dialogs, where they can be pressed.
    • No more "left Crunchyroll" a few hours after "now on Crunchyroll": a title is told as gone once a service stayed gone a day. Sequel news no longer tells of adaptations out for years.
    • The command palette offers going through Planning, Paused and In progress.

    • Go through Paused as cards, as Planning already could: keep a title paused, drop it or pick it up again, with where it stopped and when you last watched it. Both decks show the title's tags and put your most used ones, Top Priority say, on or off with a tap.
    • Library groups by tag, the way AniList shows custom lists.
    • Your AniList history reads a public profile by name when AniList is not connected, and afterwards fills in the start and finish dates your list lacks. Its last year shows on your Kioku profile's calendar too.
    • The Stats calendar has a year menu once your marks span years.
    • Shows on the air or announced no longer carry the episodes out so far as their length (One Piece at 1168, new seasons at 1), in the app and on the Kioku server.
    • A member's app on a server without AniList sign-in starts the list by name or from a file instead of a Connect AniList that cannot work.

Windows 10 and 11 Kioku-2.73.0-windows.zip Unzip it and double-click Kioku.exe. Kioku is not code signed, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. Kioku adds itself to the Start menu.
macOS 12 and later Kioku-2.73.0-macos.zip Move Kioku to Applications and open it. It is not notarized, so the first time open System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
Linux x64 and arm64 Kioku-2.73.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-2.73.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz Extract and run ./kioku. Kioku adds itself to the application menu.
Browser extension Kioku-2.73.0-extension-chromium.zip, Kioku-2.73.0-extension-firefox.zip Chromium-based browsers: unzip, open the extensions page, turn on Developer mode and choose Load unpacked. Firefox: about:debugging > This Firefox > Load Temporary Add-on (Developer Edition and Nightly can keep it for good).
Kioku server (Linux x64 and arm64) Kioku-server-2.73.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-server-2.73.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz For your own Kioku server with docker or podman: curl -fsSL https://git.toxik.space/Toxuki/kioku/raw/branch/main/deploy/install.sh | bash -s -- --domain your.domain, or extract the archive and run ./kioku.sh install --domain your.domain.

    • Bring in your AniList history: every episode and chapter you marked on AniList, on the day you marked it, fills in the Stats calendar, streaks, months and the days each episode was watched. Your list does not change. It is under Settings, Data, the calendar points to it, and a first AniList list can bring it along.
    • Watch no longer lists a title under your streaming services while its next episodes are on this computer.
    • On phones the comic and EPUB readers' bars fit one row; cropping, panels, fit to width and full screen wait under More.
    • At the end of a chapter read right to left, the next chapter's arrow points left.

    • Go through Planning as cards: keep a title planned, take it off your list (with undo) or start it. It is under More on the Planning tab, and Home's random pick links to it once Planning is long.
    • Changing four or more titles at once, like pausing what went quiet, reaches the Kioku server without filling your friends' activity feeds.
    • More like this on an anime's page can keep to the shorter titles: films, specials and series of up to five hours.
    • The command palette opens Behind on airing and Gone quiet.
    • Help explains catching up, Gone quiet, the Planning cards and running your own server.
    • Kioku servers send their admins a weekly email of how the server went: new members, what waits, jobs that keep failing and a newer release. Turn it off under Account.
