2026-10-14 06:48:35 +00:00 | 1481 commits to main since this releaseKioku is a tracker for anime, manga and light novels that runs on your own computer. It is made first for Windows and works on macOS and Linux too. Your library lives in a database on your computer, syncs with AniList, MyAnimeList, AniDB, Kitsu and MangaBaka, plays your episodes in mpv, reads your manga and light novels, and lets you watch together with friends. Kioku speaks English and Slovak.
New in 1.2.0
- Characters, staff and studios: three new pages in the sidebar keep your favourite characters, people (voice actors, directors, authors) and studios. Their own pages show who they are, AniList's description with spoilers hidden until clicked, and their works: where a character appears and who voices them, a voice actor's roles and other credits, a studio's works. Press the heart on their pages, in Search or on a title's page; with AniList connected, Import from AniList brings in your favourites from there.
- Search finds characters, staff and studios too, and Source now lists every service Kioku is set up for: MyAnimeList and AniDB join Kitsu and MangaBaka.
- Where to watch says where each link works when its address or AniList's note tells (Japan, United States, Southeast Asia and so on) and marks links meant for other regions than the one set in Settings.
- Images load much faster: a cover Kioku has not kept yet comes straight from its image server, alongside the rest of the page, while Kioku keeps a copy for next time. With nothing kept yet, the first screen of the library loads in under a second instead of three, the seasons page instead of seven.
- Fixed: MyAnimeList got the same progress on every sync for titles where Kioku counts more episodes or chapters than MyAnimeList's record of the work.
- Fixed:
kioku versionprints the version; it used to start the app.
New in 1.1.1
- Linux with NVIDIA graphics: Kioku now opens in an app window of Chromium, Chrome, Brave, Vivaldi or Edge when one is installed, instead of WebKitGTK. WebKitGTK crashed on NVIDIA's driver, and drawing without the GPU made it lag; the browser window draws with the GPU, smoothly.
KIOKU_WINDOW=nativekeeps WebKitGTK. - When Kioku crashes, the details are written at the end of
kioku.login the data folder (Settings > App shows the folder), so a crash can be reported and fixed. On Linux the system's crash reporter also keeps a core dump.
New in 1.1.0
- Kitsu: connect with your Kitsu email or profile name and your password. The password goes to Kitsu once, for a login token, and is not kept. Anime, manga and light novels sync both ways, with Kitsu's scores of 1 to 10 in half steps.
- MangaBaka: connect with an API key from your MangaBaka account settings. Manga, manhwa, manhua and light novels sync both ways, chapters and volumes included.
- Search can ask Kitsu or MangaBaka instead of AniList (Source next to the tabs), for the titles AniList does not have, and add them in one click.
- Titles from Kitsu and MangaBaka join the same works as on AniList and MyAnimeList through the IDs they carry, so nothing shows up twice.
- Connecting another service never overwrites what it has with empty values: the first time an entry meets a service, a filled-in note, date, score or volume count wins on either side.
- Login errors say what was wrong: an empty field, or details the service did not accept.
Download and first start
System File First start Windows 10 and 11 Kioku-1.2.0-windows.zipUnzip it and double-click Kioku.exe. Kioku is not code signed, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. Kioku adds itself to the Start menu.macOS 12 and later Kioku-1.2.0-macos.zipMove Kioku to Applications and open it. It is not notarized, so the first time open System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway. Linux x64 and arm64 Kioku-1.2.0-linux-x64.tar.gz,Kioku-1.2.0-linux-arm64.tar.gzExtract and run ./kioku. Kioku adds itself to the application menu.SHA256SUMSlists the checksums of every file. Kioku opens in a window of its own (WebView2 on Windows; on Linux WebKitGTK, or a Chromium-based browser's app window with NVIDIA graphics or without WebKitGTK; the default browser as a last resort). To connect AniList, open Sync, choose Connect next to AniList and approve: nothing else to set up. The first sync is always a preview that changes nothing until you apply it.To play episodes, install mpv. Everything else Kioku needs comes with it or installs itself.
What Kioku does
Home and your library
- Home shows what to watch and read next: the next episode or chapter of everything in progress, with Play or Read when the file is on your computer and Watch on your streaming service otherwise, what airs this week from your list, first episodes further out, a random pick from Planning, and finished titles still waiting for a score.
- Library, Anime, Manga and Light novels show your entries as covers, a list or a table, with status tabs, filters (format, genre, tag, year, season, score, provider links, airing, my streaming services), saved presets and sorting.
- Quick edits everywhere: +1, status and score menus, a full editor with a date picker for started and finished dates and a tag picker. Tags can be renamed, merged, coloured and deleted in Settings.
- Select several titles to change their status, score or tags, put them on a list or remove them at once; removing asks first and can be undone.
- The keyboard works throughout: Ctrl+K opens the command palette, / filters, j and k move, + and - change progress, 1 to 9 score, ? lists the keys.
- Titles of your own that no provider knows can be added by hand.
Finding titles
- Search covers all of AniList's anime, manga and light novels: type a name or browse what is trending, with filters for format, status, season, year and genres and five ways to sort. Characters, Staff and Studios search AniList's people. Source switches to another service Kioku is set up for (MyAnimeList, AniDB, Kitsu, MangaBaka), searched by title. One click adds a title.
- A title's page has your entry, where to watch, the airing schedule, characters with their voice actors, staff, recommendations, related titles and the trailer, plus what your friends think of it. Arrange sections chooses what shows and in what order.
Syncing
- Two-way sync with AniList, MyAnimeList, AniDB, Kitsu and MangaBaka, field by field against what each service last confirmed, so changes on both sides merge instead of overwriting each other.
- Every first sync is a preview. Conflicts wait for you to choose, and nothing is ever deleted on a service without your confirmation.
- A backup of the library is made before every sync or import that changes it.
- MyAnimeList XML exports can be imported without an account, and the library exported in that format.
- Titles are linked across services with the anime-offline-database, the IDs Kitsu and MangaBaka give, and title matching; uncertain links wait for review.
Watching
- Add the folders with your episodes in Settings > Player. Kioku reads the file names, links the files to your titles and lists them on each title's page; files it cannot place wait for you to assign.
- Episodes play in mpv with the following ones queued, resume where you stopped, are marked watched near their end, and openings and endings are skipped from chapters and AniSkip, on their own or with Tab. A bar under every page shows what plays and controls it.
- Free official streams (YouTube, Bilibili) and trailers play in mpv through yt-dlp, which Kioku installs, checks and keeps up to date along with Deno.
- Where to watch lists the streaming services of each title, your services first, with the region a link is meant for when Kioku can tell; Watch opens the episode and Kioku offers to mark it watched when you come back.
- Discord can show what you watch as your status (Settings > Player). It needs a Discord application ID, which Settings explains how to make.
Reading
- Manga, comics and light novels in the same folders open in Kioku's reader: CBZ, ZIP, CBR and RAR archives, folders of images, PDFs and EPUBs.
- Right to left, left to right, two pages at a time or a long strip, remembered per title; EPUBs follow the app's colours with a text size of your choice.
- Kioku remembers the page, counts a chapter or volume as read at its end and offers the next one.
Together with friends
- Watch together puts you and your friends in a room on a Syncplay server: pause, seek and the next episode happen for everyone, with a chat. An invite link opens the room in a friend's Kioku; friends with Syncplay itself can join too.
- Friends shows the people you follow on AniList and what they watched and read lately.
- Lists are your own lists of any titles, in your order with a note each. Share a list or a single title as a link that opens in a friend's Kioku, as text with AniList pages, or as a file. Your friend sees a preview and keeps it as a list, adds the titles to their library or picks single ones.
Characters, staff and studios
- Characters, Staff and Studios keep the ones you like, with their pictures, newest first; AniList favourites can be imported.
- Their pages come from AniList: details, description, and the works they are part of, with voice actors, voice roles and credits; every work opens or goes to Planning with one click.
Seasons, schedule and notifications
- Seasons shows each anime season with countdowns, streaming services and one-click adding, plus the shows still airing and the announced ones.
- Schedule is the week's airing timetable in your time zone. Its calendar feed brings the episodes from your list into calendar apps, or into a file for web calendars.
- Notifications when new episodes air: in the app, on the desktop, through Web Push, ntfy, Gotify, Discord webhooks or any webhook, with a delay after broadcast, quiet hours, a daily digest and per-title settings.
- Stats sums up time watched, chapters read, scores, genres and your activity.
Your data
- Settings > Data lists the backups and restores one (Kioku backs up the current state first and restarts with the backup).
- Moving to another computer: restore a backup file from the old computer, or export the library file there and import it on the new one.
- Logins and passwords are kept in the system keychain (Windows Credential Manager, macOS Keychain, Secret Service on Linux), never in the database.
Look and feel
- Light and dark themes, an interface colour of your choice (a preset, any colour, or one taken from a picture), with light and dark versions worked out so text stays readable.
- English and Slovak.
- A native window without browser menus, and every page works at phone width.
- Kioku checks for new releases twice a day; on Windows and Linux it installs them (checked against the published checksums) and restarts into them.
As a server
kioku serveruns Kioku without a window, for a home server or a NAS. It can be reached from other devices with a password set (kioku hash-password). The read-me covers the configuration.Fixed since 1.0.0
1.0.0 and 1.0.1 were tagged but never published; these fixes are in every release since:
- Linux: WebKitGTK's page process no longer takes the window down with it: if it ends (a driver crash, too little memory), the page reloads instead of leaving an empty window.
- Opening a newer Kioku while an older one runs in the background now replaces the old one, instead of showing its window.
- Friends works with AniList again: the query for the people you follow was refused.
Good to know
- MyAnimeList and AniDB let apps in only with a client registration you make yourself; Sync walks you through it. AniList and Kitsu work right away, MangaBaka with an API key you create on its site.
- AniDB's protocol sends your password unencrypted; Kioku warns before you turn on what needs it.
- AniList logins return to
http://127.0.0.1:7777. If another program uses that port, Kioku moves to a free one and says so; close the other program before connecting AniList. - macOS cannot install updates by itself: Kioku links to the download.
