Kioku is a tracker for anime, manga, light novels and visual novels that runs on your own computer. It is made first for Windows and works on macOS and Linux too. Your library lives in a database on your computer, syncs with AniList, MyAnimeList, AniDB, Kitsu, MangaBaka, Shikimori, Simkl, Bangumi and VNDB, sends to Trakt, plays your episodes in mpv or follows the player you already use, reads your manga and light novels, and lets you watch together with friends. Kioku speaks English, Slovak and Czech.

    New in 2.52.1

    • Airing shows get their next episode time again with Kioku's database first: when the Kioku server sends the episodes to come but not the next one, the first of them is the next, and while the server is out of reach AniList answers.
    • A series the server says ended after one episode is checked again while you watch it, and that record no longer undoes the right count or status.

    Download and first start

    System File First start
Windows 10 and 11 Kioku-2.52.1-windows.zip Unzip it and double-click Kioku.exe. Kioku is not code signed, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. Kioku adds itself to the Start menu.
macOS 12 and later Kioku-2.52.1-macos.zip Move Kioku to Applications and open it. It is not notarized, so the first time open System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
Linux x64 and arm64 Kioku-2.52.1-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-2.52.1-linux-arm64.tar.gz Extract and run ./kioku. Kioku adds itself to the application menu.
Browser extension Kioku-2.52.1-extension-chromium.zip, Kioku-2.52.1-extension-firefox.zip Chromium-based browsers: unzip, open the extensions page, turn on Developer mode and choose Load unpacked. Firefox: about:debugging > This Firefox > Load Temporary Add-on (Developer Edition and Nightly can keep it for good).
Kioku server (Linux x64 and arm64) Kioku-server-2.52.1-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-server-2.52.1-linux-arm64.tar.gz For your own Kioku server with docker or podman: curl -fsSL https://git.toxik.space/Toxuki/kioku/raw/branch/main/deploy/install.sh | bash -s -- --domain your.domain, or extract the archive and run ./kioku.sh install --domain your.domain. Its README.md covers Nginx Proxy Manager, the firewall, updates and backups.

SHA256SUMS lists the checksums of every file. Kioku opens in a window of its own (WebView2 on Windows; on Linux WebKitGTK, or a Chromium-based browser's app window with NVIDIA graphics or without WebKitGTK; the default browser as a last resort). To connect AniList, open Services, choose Connect on AniList and approve: nothing else to set up. The first sync is always a preview that changes nothing until you apply it.

To play episodes in Kioku's own player, install mpv; or keep the player you have and let Kioku follow it. Everything else Kioku needs comes with it or installs itself.

Everything Kioku does and good to know: the full notes. Earlier releases: all notes.

    • A season a service releases all at once is one row in the week's schedule and the month (Ep 1 to 10), one event in the calendar feed and one notification, instead of ten.
    • A sync that Kioku was closed in the middle of no longer shows as running forever; it ends as an error when Kioku starts again.
    • For servers: Server, Catalog says how many airing titles in members' libraries have no time for their next episode, a sign that the AniList jobs are not reaching them.
    • On the website: a thread's moderation tools fold away, your own posts offer Remove rather than Hide, and a conversation fills a phone's screen. Hints on Stats and Seasons point where their buttons really are.

Fixes for airing shows, found in a real library.

    • With Kioku's database first, shows that air get their next episode again: what the Kioku server cannot time, AniList answers, so countdowns, the week's schedule and new-episode notices work for them.
    • A series recorded with one episode while its length was unknown no longer stops +1 at episode one or marks it completed there.
    • On the Kioku server, AniList's and VNDB's counts put a title's number of episodes right, and an app can no longer end a show that still has an episode to come. Update the server too.

    New in 2.47.1

    • A finished title keeps its real number of episodes: a count the Kioku server took before the title's length was known gives way to the final one, and AniList's count stands over a stale one from the server.
    • Achievements count titles whose length is not known yet, and on the server they count rewatches as the app does.
    • Discover with Kioku's database shows Trending in its sort menu again, and its hint fits who can search by story.
    • Friends has one way into watching together, /services and /discover open their pages, and numbers are grouped the same way everywhere.

    Download and first start

    System File First start
Windows 10 and 11 Kioku-2.47.1-windows.zip Unzip it and double-click Kioku.exe. Kioku is not code signed, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. Kioku adds itself to the Start menu.
macOS 12 and later Kioku-2.47.1-macos.zip Move Kioku to Applications and open it. It is not notarized, so the first time open System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
Linux x64 and arm64 Kioku-2.47.1-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-2.47.1-linux-arm64.tar.gz Extract and run ./kioku. Kioku adds itself to the application menu.
Browser extension Kioku-2.47.1-extension-chromium.zip, Kioku-2.47.1-extension-firefox.zip Chromium-based browsers: unzip, open the extensions page, turn on Developer mode and choose Load unpacked. Firefox: about:debugging > This Firefox > Load Temporary Add-on (Developer Edition and Nightly can keep it for good).
Kioku server (Linux x64 and arm64) Kioku-server-2.47.1-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-server-2.47.1-linux-arm64.tar.gz For your own Kioku server with docker or podman: curl -fsSL https://git.toxik.space/Toxuki/kioku/raw/branch/main/deploy/install.sh | bash -s -- --domain your.domain, or extract the archive and run ./kioku.sh install --domain your.domain.

    • The activity feed switches between the people you follow and everyone on your Kioku server, so members find each other before they are friends.
    • Watch and Read no longer ask for their shelf again and again while they are open, which kept Kioku busy there since 1.35.0.
