Kioku is a tracker for anime, manga, light novels and visual novels that runs on your own computer. It is made first for Windows and works on macOS and Linux too. Your library lives in a database on your computer, syncs with AniList, MyAnimeList, AniDB, Kitsu, MangaBaka, Shikimori, Simkl, Bangumi and VNDB, sends to Trakt, plays your episodes in mpv or follows the player you already use, reads your manga and light novels, and lets you watch together with friends. Kioku speaks English, Slovak and Czech.

    New in 2.118.0

    • Fixes a fault of 2.118.0: a title this computer no longer names the way your Kioku account does (taken off the library, a link undone) could have its picks taken off the account and your other devices. Update from 2.118.0 soon.
    • Ready for the clocks going back on 25 October: episodes marked one a day land one on each day, the morning push and the summary after quiet hours come at their time, a title's usual broadcast time follows the new clock, and Away for a week lasts exactly a week.
    • An episode put off is named by its new day in your time zone and language on your devices.
    • The goal of hours a week counts a week that began last month whole.
    • A title AniList showed nowhere, taken over by Kioku, keeps the score, notes and dates it had there.
    • The pick screen counts the picks among the titles it shows.

    Download and first start

    System File First start
Windows 10 and 11 Kioku-2.118.0-windows.zip Unzip it and double-click Kioku.exe. Kioku is not code signed, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. Kioku adds itself to the Start menu.
macOS 12 and later Kioku-2.118.0-macos.zip Move Kioku to Applications and open it. It is not notarized, so the first time open System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
Linux x64 and arm64 Kioku-2.118.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-2.118.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz Extract and run ./kioku. Kioku adds itself to the application menu.
Browser extension Kioku-2.118.0-extension-chromium.zip, Kioku-2.118.0-extension-firefox.zip Chromium-based browsers: unzip, open the extensions page, turn on Developer mode and choose Load unpacked. Firefox: about:debugging > This Firefox > Load Temporary Add-on (Developer Edition and Nightly can keep it for good).
Kioku server (Linux x64 and arm64) Kioku-server-2.118.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-server-2.118.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz For your own Kioku server with docker or podman: curl -fsSL https://git.toxik.space/Toxuki/kioku/raw/branch/main/deploy/install.sh | bash -s -- --domain your.domain, or extract the archive and run ./kioku.sh install --domain your.domain. Its README.md covers Nginx Proxy Manager, the firewall, updates and backups.

SHA256SUMS lists the checksums of every file. Kioku opens in a window of its own (WebView2 on Windows; on Linux WebKitGTK, or a Chromium-based browser's app window with NVIDIA graphics or without WebKitGTK; the default browser as a last resort). To connect AniList, open Services, choose Connect on AniList and approve: nothing else to set up. The first sync is always a preview that changes nothing until you apply it.

To play episodes in Kioku's own player, install mpv; or keep the player you have and let Kioku follow it. Everything else Kioku needs comes with it or installs itself.

Everything Kioku does and good to know: the full notes. Earlier releases: all notes.

    • The library file now carries your picks, tier lists, marks on titles, the year's best and the tracks you chose, so moving to another computer with it keeps your ranking.
    • AniList keeps the custom lists you made on its website: a change of lists here adds to them instead of replacing them, lists made there since come into Kioku, and a title added on AniList while Kioku's own add waited is no longer written over.
    • The Kioku server reads your AniList lists and score format before every sync, so a list made on AniList later is no longer dropped.
    • A score kept finer on AniList than the scale it shows now is no longer sent back rounded.
    • The queue gives way to Stop: what it was opening no longer takes the window back. A night offline no longer empties a playlist one error at a time, and an opening that cannot play moves on to the next.
    • Play, pause or a seek while the next episode counts down holds it, End of queue stops after one round on repeat, and openings play at their own speed.
    • On the phone, swipe a pair left or right to pick.
    • Tags that stand for a score suggests your tags named like one (Masterpiece, Loved), a tap each.
    • Manga pages speak of chapters, news names an anime and its manga apart, and a title with fifty tags shows twenty until you ask for the rest.

    • Backups keep what matters longer: the copies made before syncs (at most one an hour) no longer push out the ones made before a restore, an import or a repair, and the daily backup comes even on days you only ranked titles by picking.
    • Restoring a backup sets your library as it was aside next to it instead of deleting it, and a backup cut off halfway never counts as one.
    • Importing your library file a second time no longer adds visual novels or titles known only to Simkl, Trakt or your Kioku account again.
    • An older Kioku started by mistake refuses a library a newer one wrote, instead of losing what it does not know.

    • A change sent to AniList no longer takes away tags AniList cannot hold (tags outside your custom lists); 2.114.0 could.
    • Episodes marked on one device are never taken back by another that had not caught up yet: a +1 from a phone woken with an old copy keeps the higher count already on your Kioku account.

    • On the Kioku server's website, where the server runs Kioku for you (your phone): notifications come from the server even when your Kioku there has stopped for the night, live updates no longer drop every minute and read your whole library again, and your Kioku there looks at your account the moment it wakes, so a +1 never goes over a newer change from the computer.
    • Signing out other devices or changing your password from the phone no longer signs the phone itself out.
    • A server started again no longer leaves your Kioku there unable to start, and an import of more than 1 MB from the phone goes through.
    • Marks on titles, the year's best, audio and subtitle choices and tier lists changed on two devices are put together, as your picks are.

    • Picks made on two devices before they exchange are all kept: your ranking is put together title by title instead of the newer copy replacing the other.
    • Tags changed on two sides before a sync go together: a tag added on your phone and another added on AniList both stay, everywhere.
    • Pick among the titles sharing a place: when most titles were picked once and share a rating, the pick screen says how many and picks among them set them apart.
    • Tags read as AniList writes them (Female Protagonist, Coming of Age), without "japanese production", "asia", a genre again or the source again, so Taste and your year show what your titles are about.
    • A studio counts once in Taste and your year, whichever of its names a title carries.
    • A title's tags show a percentage only where it means something.
    • Watch your best again, a Home section you can add in Arrange sections: your favourite finished anime not seen for a year or more, with Watch again or Later.
    • Holding an arrow key in a card deck decides one card, and a double click on Home's pick picks once.
    • The Kioku server's own website: adding a title you already have no longer wipes it, Undo works after changing or removing many titles, dates follow your time zone, and picks made there reach the app and back.
    • Tags you keep only in Kioku (outside AniList's custom lists, your own statuses) stay when AniList's tags change.

    • Not picked yet, among the pick screen's choices, places the titles you finished but never picked, one after another: by a few picks each, or straight into a tier with one tap or the keys 1 to 5. U takes the last one back.
    • Library covers can show the tier of your picks under the title: choose Tier from your picks in the library's look.
    • Taste and the year's top studios count a studio once, however differently AniList, MyAnimeList and others spell it.
    • Stats show a dash, not 0h, for a month from before Kioku kept track, with a way to bring in your AniList history.
    • Your Kioku account and the services you sync: changes that waited (offline, during an outage, with the app closed) are checked against the service first, so they no longer undo a newer change made on another device. A clear made on a service's website stays cleared.
    • A title removed here and added again on another device comes back, but not when you kept it apart from that service or confirmed its removal since.
    • Picks, tier lists and notes of titles another device has and this one does not stay on your Kioku account, and a failed send of up next or notes is sent again.

    • The month calendar keeps every episode across the clock change on 25 October, and an episode at midnight between two parts shows once.
    • An episode AniList puts off no longer comes back with its old date when AniList cannot be asked.
    • Changes waiting to go to a service: a new edit is sent on its own time, a failure of an older version no longer holds it back, and AniDB's "send again later" waits instead of counting as refused.

    Download and first start

    System File First start
Windows 10 and 11 Kioku-2.111.0-windows.zip Unzip it and double-click Kioku.exe. Kioku is not code signed, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. Kioku adds itself to the Start menu.
macOS 12 and later Kioku-2.111.0-macos.zip Move Kioku to Applications and open it. It is not notarized, so the first time open System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
Linux x64 and arm64 Kioku-2.111.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-2.111.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz Extract and run ./kioku. Kioku adds itself to the application menu.
Browser extension Kioku-2.111.0-extension-chromium.zip, Kioku-2.111.0-extension-firefox.zip Chromium-based browsers: unzip, open the extensions page, turn on Developer mode and choose Load unpacked. Firefox: about:debugging > This Firefox > Load Temporary Add-on (Developer Edition and Nightly can keep it for good).
Kioku server (Linux x64 and arm64) Kioku-server-2.111.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-server-2.111.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz For your own Kioku server with docker or podman: curl -fsSL https://git.toxik.space/Toxuki/kioku/raw/branch/main/deploy/install.sh | bash -s -- --domain your.domain, or extract the archive and run ./kioku.sh install --domain your.domain.

    • Pick among this season's titles, the shows you follow week to week.
    • Your tags beside your order of picks: how each tag's titles fall in the tiers, and the ones far from the rest.
    • The queue is steadier: it never tries the same item over and over or plays it twice, Undo of a shuffle, a clear or a removal fits the queue as it is now, and Not for me takes the title off the queue.
    • Sleep at the queue's end stops when the last items have nothing to play, the speed you chose stays out of Watch together rooms, and the window's keys wait while a dialog is open.

    • Fixed: changing the order of the Planning or Paused cards with the arrow keys also took the next title off your list or dropped it. Only the order changes now.
    • With the daily digest on, a delay or removal of an episode the morning's digest listed is told again, as before 2.109.0.
    • The notice that a service answers again comes even when the last waiting change could not be sent.
    • Taking back a placing in your picks works once, and nothing says "added" or "skipped" when it could not be saved.
