Kioku is a tracker for anime, manga, light novels and visual novels that runs on your own computer. It is made first for Windows and works on macOS and Linux too. Your library lives in a database on your computer, syncs with AniList, MyAnimeList, AniDB, Kitsu, MangaBaka, Shikimori, Simkl, Bangumi and VNDB, sends to Trakt, plays your episodes in mpv or follows the player you already use, reads your manga and light novels, and lets you watch together with friends. Kioku speaks English, Slovak and Czech.

    New in 2.46.0

Posts of your own, and pages that fit a phone better.

    • Write a post on the activity feed, in the app or on the website, as on AniList: friends react and reply, and you can edit or remove it.
    • Naming someone with @ in a post or a reply tells them, and who replied under an activity hears the replies after theirs, one notice for the whole conversation.
    • Charts from Kioku's database rank visual novels too.
    • Title pages, Home, the week's schedule, profiles, Friends' trending row and clubs fit a phone better and say each thing once; a profile's Block and Report wait under More.

    Download and first start

    System File First start
Windows 10 and 11 Kioku-2.46.0-windows.zip Unzip it and double-click Kioku.exe. Kioku is not code signed, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. Kioku adds itself to the Start menu.
macOS 12 and later Kioku-2.46.0-macos.zip Move Kioku to Applications and open it. It is not notarized, so the first time open System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
Linux x64 and arm64 Kioku-2.46.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-2.46.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz Extract and run ./kioku. Kioku adds itself to the application menu.
Browser extension Kioku-2.46.0-extension-chromium.zip, Kioku-2.46.0-extension-firefox.zip Chromium-based browsers: unzip, open the extensions page, turn on Developer mode and choose Load unpacked. Firefox: about:debugging > This Firefox > Load Temporary Add-on (Developer Edition and Nightly can keep it for good).
Kioku server (Linux x64 and arm64) Kioku-server-2.46.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-server-2.46.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz For your own Kioku server with docker or podman: curl -fsSL https://git.toxik.space/Toxuki/kioku/raw/branch/main/deploy/install.sh | bash -s -- --domain your.domain, or extract the archive and run ./kioku.sh install --domain your.domain. Its README.md covers Nginx Proxy Manager, the firewall, updates and backups.

SHA256SUMS lists the checksums of every file. Kioku opens in a window of its own (WebView2 on Windows; on Linux WebKitGTK, or a Chromium-based browser's app window with NVIDIA graphics or without WebKitGTK; the default browser as a last resort). To connect AniList, open Services, choose Connect on AniList and approve: nothing else to set up. The first sync is always a preview that changes nothing until you apply it.

To play episodes in Kioku's own player, install mpv; or keep the player you have and let Kioku follow it. Everything else Kioku needs comes with it or installs itself.

Everything Kioku does and good to know: the full notes. Earlier releases: all notes.

The parts that were only half there.

    • Titles AniList does not know (visual novels, and titles only on Kitsu, AniDB or MangaBaka) have their community, cast and staff, recommendations, openings and endings, and next episode, from Kioku's database.
    • Shared lists and titles carry their VNDB, Kitsu or MangaBaka ID, so a friend's Kioku opens and adds them.
    • Discover with Kioku's database keeps a studio's and a person's works, finds characters, staff and studios, and Trending is what members keep. The members' top chart has year, genre and tag.
    • On the website, Undo after removing a title works, and a title has one page wherever its link comes from.
    • Removing a streaming link you shared takes it back from the server too, and Settings, Reading chooses how books open.
    • For servers: admins hand out a link to set a new password when the server sends no mail, dub notices say when the server has no AnimeSchedule token, and chapters and dubs are jobs under Server, Catalog, every job with a name.

Visual novels on the server, and a sync that stops asking.

    • Titles no longer ask to be removed from your Kioku account on every sync. When the server knew a title by another ID (its MyAnimeList number, say), a change on the server made a second copy in your library, and the first was then asked about each time, even after Put back. Kioku now keeps them as one title, puts copies made this way back together by itself, and closes those questions.
    • Every visual novel from VNDB is in the server's catalog, read by a job that keeps it up to date, so the website finds them in search too.
    • Google Books is left alone for half a day after it says no, instead of being asked again at every start.

Visual novels, and Trakt from the server.

    • Visual novels are a fourth kind next to anime, manga and light novels, with their own section once your library holds one. They sync with VNDB with a token you make there: statuses, votes, dates and notes, and search, details and pasted vndb.org links come from it. They keep no count, so there is no +1 on them.
    • Kioku accounts send your anime to Trakt from the server, found by their shows on TheTVDB and films on TMDB, and keep your visual novels in step with VNDB.

Quicker and lighter, on the website most of all.

    • Title pages load a moment before you open them, the library catches up with only what changed since your last visit, and Add title shows your library's matches as you type, before the server answers. A first AniList sync reads your anime and manga lists at the same time.
    • On the website, the title pages of your library open without a connection too.
    • Older phones are spared animations, shadows, sharp covers and reading ahead: automatic, or Light on this device under Settings, Comfort.
    • When Kioku crashed, it asks the next time whether to send what went wrong to its developers, which you can read first; or always, or never, under Settings, About.
    • A badge for a blog or site with what you watch now, from your profile's settings.
    • For servers: catalog fixes shared between servers, answers browsers keep and check instead of fetching again, and webhooks for apps signed in with OAuth.

Kioku speaks English, Slovak and Czech.

    New in 2.41.0

Kioku's own database carries the title pages, and the server gets the tools to run it.

    • With a Kioku account, title pages take from Kioku's database what they took from AniList: where to watch (with links members add for their country), recommendations, characters, staff and studios with their details, episode titles, air days and lengths, exact episode lengths measured from the files members play, and how often a manga gets new chapters. Discover filters by origin, country, counts, length, score and popularity. AniList stays a choice under Settings, General.
    • The database is fixed together: report a wrong cover, title or count from a title's page; reviewers see titles that lack something, titles that look the same to merge, a title's history with undo, one change to many titles, and where each record comes from. Content notes say what a title shows, such as violence or flashing lights.
    • Accounts: sign in with a passkey or by scanning a code with your phone, hear of sign-ins from new devices, take back a deleted account within 14 days, change your name with old links still working, share one account as a household with profiles, and move an account to another server. Pause sharing for a while, hide when you were last active, keep your profile out of search engines, see who sees what on one page, and let messages delete themselves.
    • Your data: the library as Markdown notes, your year in review as a PDF, a log of every change sync made, an address any player can report plays to, favourites kept in step with AniList, and Simkl and Kitsu synced by the server.
    • Running a server: announcements, new members who wait for an admin, room for each member's pictures, an admin log, a read-only mode, the server's own name and logo, the wording of its emails, weekly database upkeep, pictures in S3, a Helm chart, a Grafana dashboard, and a public directory of servers that take new members.

    • Everything people write is Markdown: posts, replies, messages, reviews, lists and their notes, profiles, clubs, title guides, summaries, your notes on titles and episodes. Headings, bold, italic, struck, lists (numbered, nested, tasks), code, tables, quotes, links and pictures show as they should, beside Kioku's spoilers and @mentions. Pictures load only from the server and the sites covers come from.
    • A Markdown editor wherever you write at length: buttons for every mark, Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I and Ctrl+K, lists that go on when you press Enter, and a preview.
    • Character pages show who voices the character, at the top.
    • With a Kioku account, Discover searches Kioku's database by default, and quick search, Add title, season charts and the week's schedule come from it too. AniList stays a choice under Settings, General.
    • Reviewers get a To check list under Catalog suggestions: fields where AniList says otherwise than the catalog, to take AniList's value with one click or keep ours, and titles members came across that the catalog lacks. Kioku finds the AniList ones by itself; the rest wait to be added or dismissed.

    Download and first start

    System File First start
Windows 10 and 11 Kioku-2.40.0-windows.zip Unzip it and double-click Kioku.exe. Kioku is not code signed, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. Kioku adds itself to the Start menu.
macOS 12 and later Kioku-2.40.0-macos.zip Move Kioku to Applications and open it. It is not notarized, so the first time open System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
Linux x64 and arm64 Kioku-2.40.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-2.40.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz Extract and run ./kioku. Kioku adds itself to the application menu.
Browser extension Kioku-2.40.0-extension-chromium.zip, Kioku-2.40.0-extension-firefox.zip Chromium-based browsers: unzip, open the extensions page, turn on Developer mode and choose Load unpacked. Firefox: about:debugging > This Firefox > Load Temporary Add-on (Developer Edition and Nightly can keep it for good).
Kioku server (Linux x64 and arm64) Kioku-server-2.40.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-server-2.40.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz For your own Kioku server with docker or podman: curl -fsSL https://git.toxik.space/Toxuki/kioku/raw/branch/main/deploy/install.sh | bash -s -- --domain your.domain, or extract the archive and run ./kioku.sh install --domain your.domain.

Kioku is a tracker for anime, manga and light novels that runs on your own computer. It is made first for Windows and works on macOS and Linux too. Your library lives in a database on your computer, syncs with AniList, MyAnimeList, AniDB, Kitsu, MangaBaka, Shikimori, Simkl and Bangumi, sends to Trakt, plays your episodes in mpv or follows the player you already use, reads your manga and light novels, and lets you watch together with friends. Kioku speaks English, Slovak and Czech.

Fix any title from its page, and titles from Kioku's own database.

    • Moderators, admins and members with a catalog role change a title's whole record from its page (More, then Edit): the summary, dates, genres, studios, source, trailer and banner, related titles, characters with their voices, staff and studios (people the catalog lacks too), links and the services' IDs. Everyone else suggests a fix the same way, for a reviewer to approve. What reviewers set stays when AniList and the open data update.
    • With a Kioku account, titles' records come from Kioku's own database, fixes included. Settings, General switches to AniList if you prefer it.
    • Related titles show on the website's title pages, with their kinds in your language.
    • Roles are given with one click on each member in Server, People, also to yourself, and what a role allows shows at once.
    • Rank's By your picks turns the order of your picks into scores spread over the whole scale.
    • Hentai shows as a genre like the others.
    • A notice tells you when an episode of a title you follow is put off, and the website's title pages show the airing times, delays and episodes.

Your own data on every device, and a release calendar from the server's database.

    • Everything of your own is kept on your Kioku account and reaches every device and the website: favourite characters, staff and studios, up next, saved filters and smart lists, episode notes, the days you watched episodes, remind bells, per-title notices, drop reasons, noted moments, your own skips, watch plans, and your settings (title languages, score format, services, language, notices, goals, layouts, the sidebar and the week plan). Settings that belong to a device, such as the player, stay with it.
    • Skipped fillers, owned volumes, rankings, tier lists, your year's best and track choices now stay on the right titles on other devices; before, they could land on other titles.
    • The calendar on the website shows every episode of the week from the server's own timetable. An episode put off later is marked Delayed, with when it was due; the app marks the same from its own schedule.
    • Seasons on the website list the shows carried over from earlier seasons and the ones announced without a season yet.
    • For admins, Server, Catalog lets you browse the titles in the database and open each one's whole record, and shows what each table holds, with members' libraries counted but never shown. Run now no longer says "Something went wrong"; the job always ran.
