Kioku is a tracker for anime, manga, light novels and visual novels that runs on your own computer. It is made first for Windows and works on macOS and Linux too. Your library lives in a database on your computer, syncs with AniList, MyAnimeList, AniDB, Kitsu, MangaBaka, Shikimori, Simkl, Bangumi and VNDB, sends to Trakt, plays your episodes in mpv or follows the player you already use, reads your manga and light novels, and lets you watch together with friends. Kioku speaks English, Slovak and Czech.

    New in 2.128.0

    • A list kept together with your Kioku account keeps what changed on another device: moving titles or editing a note sends only that change, so a title added elsewhere meanwhile, or one your list partner does not see, stays on the list, and adding a title already on a list keeps its note.
    • A list made from a title's page is yours until you share it, and someone you are no longer friends with, or who blocked you, can no longer change a list you kept together.
    • Moving a list to your account says first when it is too big for it, leaves nothing half made when it fails, and says which titles stayed on this computer.
    • Taking a title off a list can be undone, note and place back.
    • The owner of a list kept together with a friend can end it with that friend, keeping the list.
    • Taste's voice actors and staff count the titles you ranked by picking, not only those with a score.
    • Watch again on Home offers one title of a franchise, from its first season, none of it while you rewatch one, and no title you finished rewatching within the year.
    • Discover's rows from your Kioku server say where you stand with titles you already have, and on a phone show the first rows until you ask for more.
    • Importing a long list file no longer comes back with "found none of the titles" when looking titles up on AniList takes too long: what was found comes in, the titles not looked up yet are listed apart, and importing the same file again after applying moves on to them.
    • A library file from your old computer offers to bring your picks and tier lists even when every title is already here, says which kept data stays as it is, brings list titles that are not in your library, and keeps the day each title was added.
    • Spreadsheets import as people write them: a list with chapters is read as manga, a progress column beside the episode count is the progress, dates like 23.10.2026 come in, and a tag with a comma stays one tag.
    • File imports never set progress past a title's length, read a title listed twice as one, use the spelling of tags you already have, do not tell friends about every title, and keep the preview to apply again if applying fails.
    • The MyAnimeList export says how many titles had no MyAnimeList ID and were left out, and a MyAnimeList file chosen under Import another tracker's list goes to its own import.
    • Close friends end with the friendship: a former friend no longer sees what you share only with close friends. A block also ends their part in your watch parties.
    • Friends hear that you watched the same episode or took up their recommendation only for titles you share with them, and a paused account's library stays hidden from others.
    • Notifications from someone you blocked, or who blocked you, no longer show in the bell, and a message on a friend's profile can be edited.
    • A forum reply quoting a post with spoilers is folded as far as that post.
    • Posts and messages on profiles can be reported, and moderators can take them down; a message written on a profile kept for friends no longer shows in everyone's feed.
    • For whoever runs a Kioku server: the changes to lists kept with the account and to the community need the server updated.

    Download and first start

    System File First start
Windows 10 and 11 Kioku-2.128.0-windows.zip Unzip it and double-click Kioku.exe. Kioku is not code signed, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. Kioku adds itself to the Start menu.
macOS 12 and later Kioku-2.128.0-macos.zip Move Kioku to Applications and open it. It is not notarized, so the first time open System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
Linux x64 and arm64 Kioku-2.128.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-2.128.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz Extract and run ./kioku. Kioku adds itself to the application menu.
Browser extension Kioku-2.128.0-extension-chromium.zip, Kioku-2.128.0-extension-firefox.zip Chromium-based browsers: unzip, open the extensions page, turn on Developer mode and choose Load unpacked. Firefox: about:debugging > This Firefox > Load Temporary Add-on (Developer Edition and Nightly can keep it for good).
Kioku server (Linux x64 and arm64) Kioku-server-2.128.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-server-2.128.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz For your own Kioku server with docker or podman: curl -fsSL https://git.toxik.space/Toxuki/kioku/raw/branch/main/deploy/install.sh | bash -s -- --domain your.domain, or extract the archive and run ./kioku.sh install --domain your.domain. Its README.md covers Nginx Proxy Manager, the firewall, updates and backups.

SHA256SUMS lists the checksums of every file. Kioku opens in a window of its own (WebView2 on Windows; on Linux WebKitGTK, or a Chromium-based browser's app window with NVIDIA graphics or without WebKitGTK; the default browser as a last resort). To connect AniList, open Services, choose Connect on AniList and approve: nothing else to set up. The first sync is always a preview that changes nothing until you apply it.

To play episodes in Kioku's own player, install mpv; or keep the player you have and let Kioku follow it. Everything else Kioku needs comes with it or installs itself.

Everything Kioku does and good to know: the full notes. Earlier releases: all notes.

    New in 2.127.0

    • For whoever runs a Kioku server: updating from a version before 2.124.0 no longer stops at a migration that took too long on a large catalog; the titles are made searchable without punctuation after the server starts.
    • For whoever runs a Kioku server with its website: the app the server runs for each member no longer reads, writes, scans or runs files a member names on the server, and does not reach addresses a member gives. Update the server.
    • A list kept in a folder shared with friends keeps its titles when its file is deleted, moved or cannot be read for a while; before, the list was emptied on every computer that shared it.
    • "Because you liked" on Discover goes by the tags that stand for a score when a title has none, so a title tagged as one you did not enjoy no longer counts as liked, and "More like this" leaves out the title's own seasons and films.
    • The Friday weekend picks put titles you tagged high first and those you tagged low last, and show titles for adults, and their covers, only as your settings allow.
    • Ready to binge orders your Planning by how it fits your taste, recommendations on Home follow when you tag a title, and the titles they come from change from week to week.
    • Discover's server rows show titles in your chosen title language and blur covers for adults.

    • Renaming a tag takes everything that names it along: the score it stands for, its loved mark, its place in Up next, its colour and the saved lists that filter by it. Deleting one takes them away, and both can be undone from the message that follows.
    • Tags that are custom lists on AniList say so in tag management, and renaming one to a name that is no list, or deleting it, first says how many titles leave the list there.
    • Typing a tag that is already in use, without its emoji or in other letters' case, adds the one in use, so "masterpiece" is your Masterpiece with its score and its AniList list. Enter adds what you typed rather than the most used suggestion.
    • The library table can show a column of your own tags, and sorting by score places titles you never scored by the score their tags stand for.
    • A tag of up to 100 characters now goes to your Kioku account too; a longer one stopped that title from syncing.
    • Searching "#loved" finds a tag with a heart after it, and the cards of Planning open the title's page from their name.

    • Settings go between your devices one by one: a device on an older Kioku that cannot take one setting still takes all the others, two settings of one group changed on two devices both stay, and taking a title off the week plan reaches your other devices.
    • The channels a device sends notifications to stay on that device, and devices still on an older Kioku keep theirs. Update every device: one on a version before this one stops taking settings when it meets one it does not know.
    • Home's random pick, "fits a weekend" and the Planning deck offer only titles that are out, and the deck says when one is not yet released. The pick stays when you come back from a title.
    • The "season starts" notification opens the right season, Up next says how many more tagged titles there are, and the Friday weekend picks change from week to week.
    • The library sorts by length and understands "upcoming" and "out", and a title's date added is when you put it on your AniList list.
    • Discarding a change waiting to go to AniList takes it back, a failed Apply says so instead of staying on "Syncing", an outage brings one message instead of one every half hour, and a title AniList refuses is not sent again on every sync.
    • The settings search finds every notification rule and the Comfort page, the phone's choices show only on a phone, and signing out your other devices or unpairing a phone asks first.

    • A title's page offers only episodes that are out: "Watch episode 6" and "Mark episode 6 watched" wait for episode 6 to air, an announced title no longer offers episode 1, and coming back from a streaming site does not offer to mark an episode still to come.
    • An episode unticked by accident and put back with Undo keeps its day, and so do the ones after it, rather than all counting as watched today.
    • Coming back from a title returns the Search page and Seasons to where you were, with their filters, and a title added from its page shows as added.
    • On a phone, dragging a sheet or a dialog down no longer drags the title page with it or goes back, and Trailer and Save to a list are icons so the buttons stay in one row.
    • The spoiler shield also folds friends' notes on the episodes still ahead of you, adult banners and covers blur throughout a title's page, and hidden scores also hide friends' and the community's scores.
    • Related titles put the prequel, sequel, parent and source first, with Show all for the rest; the episode list says when it could not load, with Try again; and the copy of a title kept for offline use follows your edits.

    • Searching Kioku's database ignores punctuation and accents once your Kioku server runs this version: "re zero", "steins gate", "dr stone" and "pokemon" find their titles, and the title that matches your words comes first. A title the database does not know yet is looked for on AniList, and picking AniList on the Search page searches AniList.
    • Home: "Not now" now also works on Almost finished and Waiting for a score, and it follows you to your phone, as does "Not interested". Titles in Up next no longer show in Gone quiet, and the Gone quiet ones leave Continue watching. Almost finished counts only what has aired, Waiting for a score stays away when scores are hidden, and every cover on Home blurs adult titles.
    • Reminders to watch or read a title again stay current: a held title is offered only while it is still paused, a planned rewatch clears once it starts, and Later moves it a month on.
    • Season cards and the season deck show what is already in your library; a card that could not be planned comes back, and the deck's arrow keys work at once.
    • The search palette keeps the row you chose when more results arrive, recent searches forget what you typed on the way, and delete buttons show on touch screens.
    • Goals follow the day when Home stays open past midnight, and accept the numbers they save.

    • On a phone, scrolling past the score bar no longer sets a score: it slides once your finger moves sideways, and a tap sets the score where it lands.
    • A +1 made while the library reloads (the app coming back, a pull to refresh) is no longer taken back, which counted the episode twice with the next +1.
    • Undo keeps a paused title paused, puts a rewatch back without counting it as finished, keeps tags with a comma in their name whole, and brings back own statuses and start dates.
    • Notifications: the Kioku server's copies of delays, chapters and dubs no longer arrive beside the app's own; notices of episodes you have watched are marked read, so the badge stops growing; a notice held overnight is dropped if you watched the episode; "I watch it live" works with the daily digest; Mark watched only shows on episodes that are out; a self-hosted ntfy that is down no longer silences the other channels.
    • A franchise counts what aired of a season still airing, rather than "12 of 12".
    • Digit keys on a title's page score on your scale, own statuses are no longer offered as tags, emptying a progress field no longer sets it to 0, and typed dates must exist.

Windows 10 and 11 Kioku-2.122.0-windows.zip Unzip it and double-click Kioku.exe. Kioku is not code signed, so Windows may say "Windows protected your PC": click More info, then Run anyway. Kioku adds itself to the Start menu.
macOS 12 and later Kioku-2.122.0-macos.zip Move Kioku to Applications and open it. It is not notarized, so the first time open System Settings > Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.
Linux x64 and arm64 Kioku-2.122.0-linux-x64.tar.gz, Kioku-2.122.0-linux-arm64.tar.gz Extract and run ./kioku. Kioku adds itself to the application menu.
Browser extension Kioku-2.122.0-extension-chromium.zip, Kioku-2.122.0-extension-firefox.zip Chromium-based browsers: unzip, open the extensions page, turn on Developer mode and choose Load unpacked.

    • An episode counts as out once its time has passed: Continue watching, Mark episode 7 watched, playing on to the next one and "behind" no longer wait for Kioku to read the airing times again, or for AniList to come back after an outage. A finale keeps a title behind for four weeks instead of dropping to 0 when it airs.
    • The library learns new airing times, lengths and statuses without being reopened from scratch, and reads itself whole once a week.
    • The Schedule's own list and the month view leave out dropped and completed titles, say when they show stored times, and move on to the new week when left open past Sunday midnight.
    • Today's episodes stay on Home once they are out, card lines and Home's week say the date for days a week or more away, Welcome back counts only what came out since your last visit, and countdowns never read "in 0m".
    • How your order moved: a title's page says how many places it rose or fell in your picks since the month started, and the biggest moves fold under the pick screen.
    • Stats: a rewatch under way keeps the first watch in your totals; a mean needs three scores; genres leave out Planning; score bars round as scores show; the activity map no longer counts a list brought in from AniList as one busy day; Done at your pace measures from when marking began and waits for a show's last episode; Your month counts as Your year does.
    • On phones, covers keep clear of the month bar at the side of the library, and Watch again in picks from a list of months.
    • Slovak and Czech Stats read right.

    • Smart lists in the sidebar show their titles again when you click them, from the top, and a saved preset keeps the rules you typed into the search (#masterpiece, -planning). A smart list lights up only while the library shows it.
    • Searching for a title with Movie, Film or TV in the middle of its name finds it; those words still filter at the start or the end of the search.
    • Grouped by tag, your own statuses no longer show as tags.
    • A score filter of 8 and up keeps everything that shows as 8 on your scale.
    • Titles with no score, year or next episode go last in every order, and the airing days in groups no longer repeat.
    • The order of your picks shows each title's tier (S to D) instead of a rating.

    • A pick a day: turn it on under Settings, Notifications, and once a day two anime you have seen come as a notification. Press the one you liked more right on it (Linux and Windows), or in the bell, and your picks order moves as on the pick screen.
    • Your picks, tier lists and marks on titles keep every title on your Kioku account even when this computer no longer knows one of them by the same name, also when another device changed them meanwhile; a library file brought in can no longer pass for newer than your account's picks.
    • Days shown in your chosen time zone everywhere, also when it is not your computer's.
    • Email and phone notices name the day an episode was put off to in your time zone.
